Recovery, Path of Least Resistance

Off-Road Recovery (Continued)

Here are some tips for regaining control of your vehicle:

  • Stay calm and remove your foot from the accelerator. Brake gently while holding the steering wheel firmly.
  • If your vehicle is sliding sideways, steer in to the direction of the slide to regain control.
  • Once you can steer the vehicle and there is enough space, re-enter the roadway.

The natural reaction is to jerk the steering wheel, especially when startled. Unfortunately, driver's will drift off the road due too being tired and will naturally be startled when they realize they are going off the pavement. It's important to get plenty of rest. If you get tired, take a break.
