Psychological Effects of Alcohol

Judgment: Driving a vehicle requires making many decisions that require good judgement. When you are approaching a traffic signal you must decide if you need to stop. In traffic, it's important to judge how closely to follow other traffic, how fast to drive for the conditions, whether its safe to pass a vehicle and even whether you should be driving in the first place.

Emotional control: Alcohol can decrease a person's inhibitions and increases aggression. It's important to not let your emotions influence your driving. We talked about aggresive driving earlier. Well, nothing can bring it out like alcohol. Decreased inhibition like speeding for fun or racing can lead to tragic consequences.

Memory and Concentration:
Memory and comprehension loss are both symptoms of drinking alcohol. This causes difficulty in focusing and increses memory lapses. Driving requires quick decisions and responses. it's important to not let your mind wonder. It only takes a couple seconds to drift off a road, dim headlights or forget to turn a turn signal on.

Alertness and attention:
Alcohol is a depressant that easily qualifies as a mind altering drug. Drivers need to be aware of common tasks such as braking for yellow lights, noticing signs, staying awake, and watching for road hazards/people/cars.
