Roadway Conditions

This animation is a recreation of a work zone collision. Sometime after the workers left, the collision occured.

It was late at night with heavy foggy conditions. Earlier that day, a road crew was utilizing a backhoe to excavate a section of road. Instead of parking the equipment in the median, the backhoe was left parked on the outside lane. A series of cones were placed in front of it. Apparently the cones were moved by people exiting the blocked driveway or another vehicle colliding with them.

The car involved, drove through the work zone and didn't see the backhoe in time to avoid the collision. The police officer noted that a contributing factor was "Impaired Visibility" and that the backhoe was left facing traffic, without reflectors.
