While significant progress has occurred in reducing fatalities among passenger vehicle occupants, motorcycle fatalities have been rising steadily since 1997 (see chart below).

In 2006, motorcycle rider fatalities reached 4,810. That's a 5% increase from 2005. It was also the first time fatalities exceeeded pedestrian fatalities since records were kept.
