Implementing Necessary Maneuvers

Passing on the Right

Slower traffic should stay to the right and faster traffic the left hand lane on highways with 2 or more lanes in your direction of travel. In Texas and many other states, you may pass on the right only when it is safe to do so, such as:

  • When the road is wide enough for two or more lanes in each direction and is clear of parked vehicles.

  • When there is a wide paved shoulder and the vehicle you are passing is stopped, slowing, preparing to make a turn or disabled.
  • When you are on a one-way road.

Do not pass on the right by driving off the paved portion of the highway.
