Compensating for the Mistakes of Other Drivers

Keep A Space Cushion Behind

Watch for tailgaters! When you are crowded by a tailgater:

  • If you are going to stop, press your brake lightly a few times before you slow down. This will warn the tailgater
  • Try to "lose" a tailgater as soon as you safely can. Allow extra room between your car and the car ahead. This will encourage the tailgater to pass you and give you more time to slow down gradually, helping prevent a rear-end collision.
  • For really aggressive tailgates you can't lose, just pull over and let them pass.
