Interacting
with Trucks (Continued)
Turning Trucks
Another turning truck
case involved a truck exiting a private drive turning left
at night. A car impacted the underside of it's trailer.
The trailer frame impacted the car at the windshield. The
animation was used to show the benefit of side under ride
guards and how the accident could have been much less severe
or avoided with their use. Currently side-under ride guards
are not required in the U.S. There are a variety of reasons
that make their use in the U.S. difficult, but their use
would save lives. The officer listed the tractor trailer
driver at fault for "Failed to yield R-O-W: private
drive".
Whether or not trailers
are equipped with these safety devices drivers must use
extreme caution when passing tractor-trailers and keep a
lookout for trailers crossing their path, especially at
night.
